| WHEREAS, |
On August 16, 2002, a special memorial
will be held in Druid Hill Park in honor of Eli Siegel the great American
poet, philosopher, and founder of Aesthetic Realism; and

| WHEREAS, |
Eli Siegel grew up in Baltimore
and his love for the City is well known. Many of his poems were inspired
by his early years in Baltimore and his contributions to world thought
began with writings completed right here in Maryland; and
 |
| WHEREAS, |
It is most appropriate for the people
of Baltimore City and the citizens of our State to join together as we
celebrate the centenary of Eli Siegel (1902-1978); and
 |
WHEREAS , |
Maryland salutes the memory and
life achievements of Eli Siegel as we observe a special day in his honor.
 |
NOW, THEREFORE, I, PARRIS
N. GLENDENING, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, do hereby proclaim AUGUST
16, 2002 as ELI SIEGEL DAY in Maryland, and do commend this observance
to all of our citizens. |
